Storytelling Week 6: Hanuman the Cat

Hanuman knew that he had to stand firm and protect Lanka with all of his might.  However, he knew that he couldn’t protect Lanka being a monkey because the guards would see him and then jig would be up.  He had to think of something quick to where he could trick the demons and that would give him time to where he could search for Sita and bring her back safely.

He thought about becoming a fly because he could then fly around quickly and more than likely he would not be noticed.  However, if he was a fly he might not be able to get away without being swatted and killed. Then he thought about becoming a snake because snakes can easily slither their way through things.  The only problem with becoming a snake is that often time’s humans are very scared of snakes.  If people see snakes they begin to panic. Panicking is not a good situation because that can lead to being killed as well. Finally Hanuman decided that he was going to going to somehow turn himself into a cat.

Hanuman decided that the perfect time to enter Lanka would be nighttime.  Many would be asleep and hopefully the only people he would encounter would be the guards by the wall of Lanka. Before it was nighttime Hanuman practiced jumping over different things so he could get used to using his four legs.  He was going to have to jump over a wall so he needed to make sure that he had it down pat.

Nightime came and he knew that it was time to make his move.  Hanuman used all of his might and he jumped over the wall.  He made it past the guards with ease and now all that was left was to find where Sita was staying. Suddenly he happened upon a peculiar house that had boards all over the windows and he wondered if that was where Sita was being kept.  He began pulling the boards off of the windows one by one as quietly as he could until he could see inside the raggedy house.  Once he saw inside all he saw was mice and old furniture. “Are you in here Sita?” Don’t be afraid I have come to save you.” Hanuman explained. He heard nothing so he decided to venture onto the next place that he thought Sita might be.

Finally he found Sita in a beautiful house that looked like it would be where Ravana was living. He could see her from afar and knew that he had to go get her. Finally he  ended up sneaking into the beautiful house and found Sita to let her know what he was doing. Sita was overjoyed to know that Hanuman was working with Rama and that she was going to be saved from Ravana.  I can’t thank you enough for coming and finding me Hanuman. I don’t how I will ever repay you, Sita explained.

Bibliography: Buck, William (1976). Ramayana: King Rama's Way

Author’s Note: I wanted to write about Hanuman’s experience as a cat as he changed himself. Hanuman's reasoning for transforming into a cat was to find Sita and let her know that he was working with Rama. He transformed into a cat because he didn't know what other creature could get past the city of Lanka and the guards without questioning.

Week 6 Reading Diary B- War in Lanka

This reading began with Rama and the monkeys building a bridge to cross over the sea to get to Lanka.  Ravana ends up making the magicians look like Rama had been killed.  It turned out that Sita was hysterical because of this.  But who wouldn’t be extremely upset if they had thought that their loved one had been killed? However, luckily the magician’s trick ended up failing thankfully.  In the end Ravana, sends multiple people to go to battle but they end up getting killed off.  Finally Ravana realizes that the only thing left to do would be go to battle himself.

Week 6 Reading Diary A- Hanuman sets Lanka on Fire

I decided to finish reading Buck’s Ramayana because I have enjoyed it thus far and wanted to finish it since I had started it. This week I have started reading Buck’s version of Hanuman finding Sita.  Hanuman definitely has an adventure when he gets swallowed by a demon and then ends up escaping by crushing the demons heart. Talk about a heart breaker!  Eventually in the story Ravana captures Hanuman and he sets his tail on fire! However, that wasn’t a smart move because once that happened he flew away and set Lanka on fire!
